What’s involved in a logo design project?
Design brief: To save us both valuable time you will be asked to fill out my project questionnaire. This will help me better understand your needs, insights, and expectations. I will review your answers and spend some time establishing a price and a time frame for completion.
If we agree on the simple terms of the project, I will request that 50% of the payment be sent before starting on your logo design.
Research: Some time is spent learning about your company or product to create a fitting logo. Oftentimes, researching a client’s industry and competitors helps create more custom logos and avoid cliche designs.
Brainstorming: This is where I take all the notes I have gathered about your company (or whatever I’m designing the logo for), begin to brainstorm ideas, and start sketching my thoughts to paper. This process should not be rushed, as this is where the initial concepts are formed.
Drawing: When I feel I’ve got enough good ideas to work with, I begin the task of converting my favorite ideas and rough sketches into more clean and proportional designs. This step can become very tedious, but well worth the added effort.
Computer Development: By now, I’ve accumulated enough drafts of the logo design to re-draw digitally on the computer. After the designs are complete, I sometimes begin playing around with color options. There are instances where I don’t worry about color until the later steps.
Delivery and Analysis: The computer-drawn concepts are then sent to you for analysis. Once a design is chosen, we then discuss any necessary modifications.
Finalizing: When a design is chosen and finalized, the second half of payment will be expected. After I receive payment, you will be sent the appropriate files for print and web use, as well as a receipt of purchase.
What communication methods are available to me during a project?
Phone, email, skype, and even texting are all acceptable forms of communication for me. Email is often preferred because it’s nondisruptive, allows for well-thought-out dialog, and sending of images, and is a convenient method of recounting a discussion.
I don’t live near you.. Is that a problem?
Not at all! Most of the people I do work for, I’ve never actually met. Between phone, email, and file sharing, projects run smoothly and efficiently.
Why should i work with your over another designer?
This is for only you to decide, but I can offer the following conveniences of working with me:
– I have over 5 years of professional design experience, a degree in computer design, and have worked with hundreds of clients from varying sizes and industries.
– I approach projects with a mindset of quality over quantity. Cutting corners or rushing jobs isn’t my thing.
– Your project won’t be juggled around between designers.
– You will be working with me directly rather than having to communicate with multiple persons.
– Your designs won’t be outsourced, crowd-sourced, or subjected to any unscrupulous practices.
– I strive to offer prompt, concise, and detailed communication.
– Your designs will be custom-made rather than simply copied from stock graphics.
– My pricing is fair considering my level of experience and ability. My rates are also at or below AIGA recommendations.
– Glowing testimonials from numerous clients I’ve done work for and continue to do work for
Do I receive 100% Ownership of completed design work?
Unless mentioned otherwise in a project agreement, you will receive 100% ownership of completed design work after final payments have been made. I only ask for the right to display created works in my portfolios for self-promotion.
What of i don’t like design work that I’m provided?
My policy is pretty standard. I require a non refundable down payment on all projects. If in the unlikely chance you are not happy with the design work that is presented to you, you have the opportunity to walk away or purchase additional work hours.
I believe this method is most fair because it splits the risk between designer and customer. In the many years I’ve been working as a designer I’ve only had 2 clients walk away empty handed. Both received what in my opinion were quality design pieces… though of course taste is subjective.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Paypal, checks, and money orders are all acceptable forms of payment. If you require payment by credit card, that can be done via PayPal, even if you don’t have an account. Paypal charges me a 3% convenience fee for payments received, but there will be no charges to you. Because of this 3% fee, a check is the preferred method of payment.
How long do projects take to complete?
The time frame for project completion will depend on your specific needs and my existing workload. To give you a rough idea, I usually request 2-3 weeks for a logo project, 3 weeks for a basic web design, and 1-2 weeks for most print work.
While I can often accommodate tight project deadlines, I usually recommend not rushing the creative process whenever possible.
How do I receive my files once a project is complete?
Your final design files will be emailed to you after complete payment has been received. If for some reason the files can’t be sent via email (i.e. file size), then there is always the option of FTP or Dropbox. If you prefer files to be mailed on MMC/Pendrive, there will be a $15 charge.
The file types/formats received depend on the type of project. Logo files, for example, will be emailed in EPS and/or PDF format; both of which are scalable and printable documents that can be edited by any graphic designer or print shop using industry-standard software. If you require web versions of your logo, they can be provided as well. To learn more about file formats and other design terminology, check out my “graphic design glossary” blog post.
Will you price match other designers?
Price matching only works for identical items. Since no two designers or projects are the same, it’s not fair to demand “So and so only charges $250 for a logo design, why can’t you?”.
There are various reasons why one designer may charge $1200 for a logo, and another charges $900 (ex: time spent on projects, level of experience and expertise, quality of product/service, etc). It is up to the customer to determine said value based on a designer’s past work, their capabilities, level of communication, etc.
